The most authentic Budapest wine experience
“Context Travel, organizer of critically acclaimed walking tours, expands its program in Budapest by partnering with gastronomy tour experts Taste Hungary, to offer their Essentials of Hungarian wines, a tasting class that savours Hungary’s many unknown specialty wines.”
The roots of Hungary’s vineyards stretch back through the history of the country itself, tracing the tangled path of its triumphs and losses. The session features a selection of the best regional varietals, with complex and full-bodied red wines appearing alongside fresh and aromatic whites, capped by a sample of the sweet nectar of Tokaj itself: a smooth white dessert wine. Although aficionados will be taken by savouring the notes and character of each wine, it is the story behind the casks that sparks the imagination.
In the comfort of Taste Hungary’s tasting room in the centre of Budapest, the class places Hungarian wines in the spotlight, under the guidance of an expert sommelier. This unique wine tasting experience perfectly enhances any itinerary in Context’s comprehensive program and offers chances to explore all corners of the city. From the Jewish quarter and castle district to opulent Art Nouveau buildings and relics of communism. This is the second collaboration between Context and Taste Hungary, following authentic Flavours of Jewish Budapestâ, a guided walk and traditional Jewish meal.
“We are so happy to be offering this wine tasting opportunity for Context’s guests. We may be biased, but we think that any visit to Hungary is incomplete without getting to know the country’s wines, which are mostly unavailable outside of Hungary,” said Carolyn BĂĄnfalvi, author of Food Wine Budapest (Little Bookroom) and founder of Taste Hungary. “We have carefully chosen eight wines which together will introduce you to Hungary’s fascinating wine culture, which is both old and new.”
